Important Tax Dates For 2009
The IRS provides a downloadable tax calendar that's useful for self-employed workers and small business owners. Here's a quick list of generally important dates:
April 15, 2009
Tax returns
2008 state and federal income tax returns are due – unless you file for an extension, in which case they’ll be due Oct. 15, 2009. If you want an automatic extension of time to file your federal tax return, be sure to file Form 4868. Be sure that you’ve paid any tax liability due for 2008 by April 15; an extension delays the date when your return is due but does not allow you to delay payment of what you owe.
IRAs or Roth IRA contributions
Deadline for making 2008 contributions.
Estimated tax payment
First-quarter estimated tax payments for 2009 are due.
Household employers
If you paid wages of $1,600 or more to a household employee in 2008, you should file Schedule H (Form 1040) with your income tax return. Report any employment taxes due by April 15, 2009.
June 15, 2009
Estimated taxes are due
Your second-quarter estimated tax payment (using form 1040-ES) for 2009 is due.
September 15, 2009
Estimated taxes are due
Your third-quarter estimated tax payment for 2009 is due.
October 15, 2009
Extended Income tax return due
Your 2009 income tax return is due if you filed an extension request using Form 4868.
December 31, 2009
Deduction deadline
This is the last date to make payments that are deductible for your 2009 tax return. Remember that deductible amounts paid by credit card by the end of the year can be deducted in 2009 even if the credit card is not paid off until 2010.
